Try yoga to improve your basketball game. You might not want to tell your teammates about it, since some of them are going to likely laugh. However, the increased flexibility and agility you get helps prevent injuries or at least leaves able to get back up quicker when you get knocked down. Don’t laugh; Kareem Abdul-Jabaar used it to extend his NBA career. Make layups count by taking off with the foot that is opposite to your shooting hand. Use your left foot when shooting with the right hand. This keeps your body balanced and moving toward the basket and keeps your body between yourself and your defender. When shooting a basketball, it is important to follow through. This means that you extend your arms out completely and flick your wrists as you release the ball. This give the ball extra force and speed. This force and speed allows you to make long distance shots that you normally wouldn’t be able to make.

For more consistency in making those free throws, stick with the same sequence of motions before you take each shot. This might mean that you dribble the ball twice, bend your knees, touch your forehead, or any other movement. Just remember it has to be fast and consistent. The reason is, this routine will put your body on alert that the next thing coming is a free throw. This will help insure your success. A slightly off-center shot often ends up catching the rim of the basket, which causes it to just fall off the side. If you see this happening, you will know exactly where to be when the shot is missed so that you can get the rebound and turn it into a basket. When working out, focus on building your core strength and perfecting your footwork. A strong core allows you to be more balanced during games. Don’t forget to also work out muscles in your back, buttocks, abdomen and hips. Similar to boxers, jump rope to help increase speed and better your footwork.

If you want to become a better dribbler, do it blindfolded. If you aren’t using your eyes to watch where the ball is, you can instead use them to see where other players are or where the net is. You shouldn’t have to stare at the ball as you dribble.

Always protect the ball when you are in possession of it. Keep your dribble off to the side of your body to make it more difficult for another player to steal the ball. While you generally want to avoid dribbling in front of you, you can do so if there are no other players in your immediate vicinity.

Hold the basketball during TV time at home. Any contact you have with the ball will only improve your skills. You are essentially teaching your hands how to work with the ball. How to hold it, move with it, and even toss it. The more time you get with the basketball, the more comfortable you will be. Lots of people love to play basketball a lot because it’s exciting and fast-paced. There are a few important things to keep in mind when playing ball. These tips will help you become a better player.
